Radar works by emitting radio waves from an antenna with sharp directional capability, then detecting the waves reflected from the target and calculating and displaying both the distance and direction to the target. In poor visibility, such as at night or in dense fog, radar detects surrounding ships and other obstacles, thus playing a crucial role in preventing disasters at sea and protecting life and property.
TOKYO KEIKI was the first Japanese company to import marine radar, with the MK2-MOD.0 in 1950. This was followed in the next year by a program for domestic radar production, becoming the first company to market a domestically-produced radar in 1952.
